Venezuela was an oil supplier for China and Maduro, backed by China, had planned to invade Guyana to annex it for their oil as well. China provided Venezuela with most of its military equipment and over $60 billion in Chinese infrastructure and energy loans. Venezuela was also an active participant in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to secure China’s dominance in raw materials and trade routes. Venezuela represented a sizeable investment for China.
