I am not thrilled with the direct impingement operating system either. Nevertheless, it works.

By the way I believe that the term “direct impingement” is a misnomer because nothing other than expanding burnt propellant gases ever “touch” the bolt carrier. In my humble opinion, the term “direct impingement” should apply to the AK-47 platform with its piston which pushes the bolt carrier.
