Anti-gun politicians in D-controlled states like NY, CA, WA, NJ, MA, CO, have relied on the fact that there has been essentially no downside to them passing obviously unconstitutional and illegal laws to appease their base. Sure, it will eventually get overturned, but it doesn’t affect their pocketbook or liberty, and they get all kinds of street cred with their supporters.

No longer. Start going after some of these people for conspiracy to violate the civil rights of gun owners, and virtue signaling starts to have a steep cost.

My guess is that the first target will be politicians in a municipality like Boulder, Evanston, or Philadelphia who pass gun control measures even though the city’s legal department or state’s AG advises them that it would be unconstitutional. Nail a couple of them for civil rights violations, and other politicians will start looking over their shoulders.
