In reply to Geoff PR. forging creates the pattern, but the sintered powder metals have the finest grain structure with smaller carbides. laser applique is news to me, but san mai and laminated combinations work well to establish a tough spine with greater wear resistance at the edge. it's weird because it shows no hamon line (differential heat treatment).
