The claims stemmed from a report (archived) published by The Guardian, on June 16, 2025. That report said doctors at VA hospitals “could refuse to treat unmarried veterans and Democrats under new hospital guidelines imposed following an executive order” by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Guardian’s reporting relied on information from anonymous sources. The reporter who wrote the article said he was unable to share original source documents ‘without compromising his sources’.

Multiple people within the Trump administration have called The Guardian’s report false, and a VA spokesperson said the agency has “asked the outlet to retract it.” A spokesperson for The Guardian said the news outlet has “no plans to retract the story,” but added that it is “considering additional context provided by the VA after publication.”

The “executive order” is the one that says the federal government will recognize two sexes, male and female, defining sex as “an individual’s immutable biological classification as either male or female,” and that ‘sex’ is not a synonym for and does not include the concept of ‘gender identity.’

The executive order has absolutely zero to do with treating veterans entitled to treatment at VA hospitals. Although there were some rule changes at VA, none of them have anything to do with denying any eligible veterans the benefits and services and treatment that have earned under law no matter what their political affiliation of martial status is, and public statements from the VA have confirmed this and no such as the Guardian has claimed has gone into effect.
