Had he broken out of jail and then acquired a firearm, then been caught? Seems if he acquired a firearm he successfully escaped jail. Or, had they just discovered he tried to break jail previously and never got out? It makes no sense.

And:

Why doesn’t CA’s system record the magistrate or judge who presided? Or is this a one-off?

Also, left off this quote is that the astrophysicist lived way out in the middle of nowhere (so there wasn’t any light pollution).

This looks like a payoff/bribe to me, or one of those made-for-tv plots where the gov’t needs to cover up killing someone and the ass***in got hisself locked up.
