I would guess their contracts were up, and Max and Lena asked for a healthy raise to stay on board. Sig needs to save money due to slowing sales of the P320, so they let them go. They may not have even wanted to pay their previous contract amount. (Total speculation.)

Fyi
The Marlin 60 held 15 to 18 rounds in the tube.

What a lot of people don't understand is that big companies will buy a smaller competitor's company and then shut it down.

And those products that you like that were made by that smaller company, will no longer be manufactured.

And that is the part of capitalism that a lot of people do not want to talk about. Also, there are far too many people who seem comfortable with a foreign company, taking over, or buying interest in an american weapons maker.

You would think.
That the people who complain about the "military industrial complex" would be screaming about this.

Remember that the Ruger company purchased Marlin. And started making lever-action rifles with a much higher quality than Marlin was doing. But the Marlin 60 rifle in 22lr. That's not being made anymore. Because it's a direct competitor to the Ruger 10/22.

And in today's gun control world, that's kind of an issue. Because the Ruger is box magazine-fed. While the Marlin was a tube fed rifle.
