This is a classic example of “malum prohibitum” laws versus “malum en se” laws which are Latin language for:
malum prohibitum == “something is bad merely because government says so” (which is completely arbitrary of course)
— versus —
malum en se == “something is bad because everyone inherently knows it to be bad” (which includes crimes that are obvious to everyone and therefore require no official laws such as stealing, rape, and murder)

The problem with malum prohibitum laws is that governments can declare literally anything to be illegal and therefore jam-up anyone and everyone who have not harmed anyone and who have/had no intention of harming anyone.

It is nonsense like this that makes it damn near impossible for me to ever vote guilty for possession charges for …….well basically anything weapon related. At this point it would take something CBRN related for me to even begin to give a fuck that someone owned if they didn’t use it illegally against someone else.
